Energy Storage is a natural fit with green energy sources such as wind and solar generation.
-
Diurnal storage - Energy storage systems can be used to store energy during the night or weekends when energy prices are lower and to produce energy during the day when prices are high.
- Energy price arbitrage—Energy storage can be used for energy price arbitrage. Besides diurnal storage capability, energy storage can be used in any situation where significant price differences occur during the day. These price differences could occur between morning and afternoon/evening periods or between times when the system is congested (higher energy prices) and times when the system is uncongested (lower energy prices).
- Associated with wind or solar generation—Energy storage can be used as part of an integrated system located at generating sites to smooth the output of intermittent and variable generating sources which can result in higher revenues and reduced spinning reserve requirements.
§
- Ancillary services—Once an energy storage system is installed, it can be configured to provide ancillary services.
